Organizations and Society: A Critique of CSR Initiatives in India

Corporate social responsibility research has so far focused on big businesses. The Supreme Court of India (TOI 13.09.2013) has declared that giving employee benefits does not amount to CSR. Yet, research findings involving large organizations are not wholly transferable to small ones, mainly because SMEs operate under conditions that are different from large ones. This research is intended to address this imbalance.

This article seeks to identify and analyze the philosophy behind Maharashtra based small and medium enterprises engagement in socially responsible activities and to identify the benefits observed and perceived by the SMEs engaged in socially responsible practices. It also helps us to investigate how socially responsible activities lead to sustainable development. Using structured questions, face-to-face interviews are conducted with the owner managers of small and medium sized enterprises in Maharashtra.

The most important aspect this study reveals is whether these small businesses are voluntarily doing socially responsible activities or they are engaged in philanthropy to be popular and just avoid mishaps. It raises the question whether enterprises are engaged in socially responsible activities as a matter of legal compliance, as a part of social obligation or as a part of their business strategy.
