Combating Child Labor: A Gray Area of Corporate Social Responsibility

Sunita Upendra Sharma

Abstract

When discussions on Corporate Social Responsibility are taking the centre stage in corporate circles as a means for sustainable business development, we deliberate on the issue of ‘Child labor’ as one of the stakeholders in this paper. Influence of the extant law on abolition of child labor has been faded away in the absence of political, judicial and executive branches’ will power to tackle with the issue. Government has failed to do the balancing act between the extant law and the implementation of the law on abolition of child labor in its letter and spirit in the light of human rights of children who join the workforce by virtue of their social and economic status and not by choice. This paper explores the advantages of abolition of child labor not only in terms of legal and economic benefits but also to develop social responsibility of corporates to avoid child labor for the cause of future of India to have healthy and educated work force. This is possible only when the companies will choose value creation for future than the instant cost benefits at the cost of loss of innocence and future of children.
